PRESS STATEMENT
Mrs. Mary Sinjen, the Honourable Commissioner of Women Affairs and Child Development, held a press briefing to announce the successful rescue of eight trafficked children from Minda Village, Lau LGA, Taraba State. The children were intercepted in Gembu, Taraba State, and have since been reunited with their biological parents.
According to Mrs. Sinjen, the Taraba State Ministry of Women Affairs and Child Development, in collaboration with the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) and the Network Against Child Trafficking and hard labor (NACTAL), carried out the rescue operation. The children were deceived and taken from their community, with false claims that they were orphans, and trafficked to southeastern states.
The principal suspect, Mrs. Patience, and her collaborators have been arrested and are currently facing legal proceedings. The Taraba State Government, under the leadership of His Excellency, Dr. Agbu Kefas, has condemned this gross violation of children’s rights and reaffirmed its commitment to protecting every child in the state.
Mrs. Sinjen urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements, emphasizing that the welfare and protection of children is a shared responsibility. She also called on parents to take responsibility for their children and utilize the free education policy.
