TARABA STATE GOVERNOR SIGNS DISABILITIES BILL INTO LAW, EARNS PRAISE FROM COMMISSIONER AND JONAPWD
In a historic move to advance the rights and welfare of persons with disabilities, His Excellency, Governor Dr. Agbu Kefas, has signed the Disabilities Bill into law on July 23, 2025. The legislation, hailed as a landmark achievement, is set to transform the lives of individuals living with disabilities across Taraba State by promoting inclusivity and dismantling systemic barriers.
The Honourable Commissioner for Social Justice and Reintegration, Dr. Filister Irarimam Musa, expressed heartfelt gratitude to Governor Kefas for his unwavering commitment to social justice. Speaking during a courtesy visit by the leadership of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD), Taraba State Chapter, at the Ministry of Social Justice and Reintegration in Jalingo, Dr. Musa lauded the governor and the Taraba State House of Assembly for their collaborative efforts in passing the bill.
“This law is a beacon of hope for persons with disabilities in Taraba State,” Dr. Musa stated. “It ensures access to essential services such as education, healthcare, employment, and accessible infrastructure, empowering every citizen to live with dignity and equality.” She emphasised that the legislation reflects the state government’s dedication to fostering an inclusive society where no one is left behind.
During the visit, Dr. Musa urged JONAPWD to remain steadfast in their advocacy and to work closely with the government to ensure the effective implementation of the new law. “Your partnership is crucial in translating this legislation into tangible improvements for our communities,” she said.
The State Chairman of JONAPWD, Comrade Matudi, expressed profound gratitude to Governor Kefas for fulfilling his promises to the disability community. “This law is a testament to His Excellency’s inclusive leadership and genuine concern for our welfare,” Matudi said. He described the signing of the bill as a “game-changer” that will enhance the quality of life for persons with disabilities across the state.
In a show of appreciation, Comrade Matudi pledged JONAPWD’s support for Governor Kefas’ administration, announcing that the association would mobilise its members statewide to back the governor’s re-election bid in 2027. “This is our way of reciprocating the governor’s remarkable gesture and commitment to our cause,” he added.
The newly enacted Disabilities Law is expected to serve as a model for inclusive governance, addressing long-standing challenges faced by persons with disabilities and promoting their full participation in society. The Ministry of Social Justice and Reintegration plans to launch statewide sensitisation campaigns and stakeholder engagements to ensure the law’s provisions are effectively implemented.
The signing of the bill has been widely celebrated as a significant step toward building a more equitable and inclusive Taraba State, reinforcing Governor Kefas’s reputation as a leader dedicated to the welfare of all citizens.
