ACReSAL Provides Economic Relief to Taraba Communities, Boosting Climate Resilience and Sustainable Development
Jalingo, Taraba State – In a significant move to promote economic development and climate resilience in Taraba State, the Agro-Climate Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscape (ACReSAL) has disbursed the sum of $20,000 to 15 communities as revolving soft loans. This initiative aims to support local farmers and entrepreneurs, promoting economic growth, sustainable development, and resilience in the face of climate change.
The ceremony, which took place in Jalingo, the state capital, was attended by top government officials, community leaders, and representatives from the World Bank and ACReSAL. In his remarks, Taraba State Governor, Dr. Kefas Agbu, expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the Honorable Minister of Environment and the World Bank for their unwavering support and dedication to the project.
According to Governor Agbu, the success of the project is a testament to the power of collaboration and partnership. He emphasized the importance of deepening the existing collaborative spirit to achieve more progressive programs that benefit the people of Taraba State.
The National Coordinator of ACReSAL, Mr. Abdulhamid Umar, commended the state government for its exceptional implementation of the project, exceeding expectations. He noted that the project’s success is a result of the government’s commitment to promoting sustainable development and climate resilience in the state.
Joy Iganya Agene, ACReSAL task team leader for World Bank Projects, also praised the governor’s dedication to the project’s success. She emphasized the importance of initiatives like ACReSAL in promoting sustainable landscape management practices, enhancing climate resilience, and improving livelihoods in semi-arid landscapes.
The Commissioner of Environment and Climate Change, Hon. Aishat A. Barde, welcomed participants and thanked the governor, minister, and World Bank for their support, acknowledging that their collaboration made the achievement possible.
The project coordinator, Dr. Yakubu Giwa, showcased the project’s successes across various communities, including the distribution of tractors and farm inputs to support local farmers. He highlighted the project’s focus on promoting sustainable agriculture practices, improving water management, and enhancing climate resilience in the face of increasing climate variability and change.
