REBUTTAL OF FALSE SOCIAL MEDIA PUBLICATION AGAINST THE GOVERNOR AND THE GARA OF DONGA
The leadership of the Taraba Tiv People Association (TATIPA), Abuja—the umbrella body representing Tiv people resident in the FCT and its environs—has received with deep concern a social media publication from a faceless Facebook account operating under the pseudonym Hrh Orsankera Afaakaa.
In a post made on Wednesday, 12 March 2026, the anonymous account alleged that the Gara of Donga, HRH Ambassador Sanvala Varzoa Shimbura, and the Governor of Taraba State, HE Dr. Agbu Kefas, were collaborating with Fulani militias to attack, kill, and displace Tiv people in Donga LGA, particularly in Tor Damsa. The post further claimed that the Gara of Donga hosted a meeting with Fulani militias in his palace to plan attacks on Tiv communities and that Governor Agbu Kefas contributed ₦25 million to support the alleged operation.
When we first encountered these disturbing claims, we considered dismissing them outright, given the well-known reputation and peace-building efforts of the individuals mentioned. However, in the interest of responsible leadership and commitment to truth, we deemed it necessary to verify the information before responding publicly.
Our findings clearly show that the allegations are false, malicious, and misleading. Unfortunately, before this rebuttal could be issued, the baseless rumor had already generated 125 likes, 172 comments, and 19 shares on social media, spreading misinformation and unnecessary tension among the public.
Contrary to the claims in the post, verified information shows that genuine peace efforts are ongoing in the area. Notably, a security meeting between Tiv and Fulani representatives was successfully held in Donga on Wednesday, 12 March 2026, to promote peace and prevent further clashes. During the meeting, the Commanding Officer of the 93 Battalion Takum issued a firm warning to all parties to desist from attacks against one another, emphasizing that any group that violates this directive will face decisive action from the Nigerian Army. The meeting was attended by representatives of the Tiv and Fulani communities, the Commanding Officer of 93 Battalion Takum, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Donga, and a representative of the Gara of Donga.
We believe it is this legitimate peace meeting that the pseudonymous account distorted in its misleading publication. Rather than plotting violence, the stakeholders were actively seeking solutions to restore peace in the area. It is highly irresponsible to twist a peace initiative into a narrative of violence
We commend the Commanding Officer of 93 Battalion Takum for his firm stance and commitment to maintaining security. His warning to all parties demonstrates the Nigerian Army’s readiness to prevent further violence and protect innocent lives.
Recent attacks in parts of Taraba State, including Takum and Donga, are indeed unfortunate and remain a serious concern for all peace-loving citizens. It is also public knowledge that ongoing peace initiatives involving the Governor of Taraba State, his Benue State counterpart, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, as well as the traditional leadership of the Tiv and Jukun nations, including the Tor Sankera and other first-class chiefs, are aimed at restoring stability in the affected communities.
In light of these sensitive developments, individuals and groups must approach issues concerning our communities with responsibility, truth, and a genuine commitment to peace. Publishing inflammatory statements without credible evidence is reckless and capable of undermining ongoing peace efforts.
The Taraba Tiv People Association (TATIPA), Abuja, therefore dissociates itself and the peace-loving Tiv people of Taraba State from the said publication and its unfounded allegations. We call on members of the public to disregard the misleading claims made by the faceless individual operating the account “Hrh Orsankera Afaakaa.”
We also urge the individual behind the account to immediately withdraw the provocative publication and tender an unreserved apology to the Governor of Taraba State and the respected Gara of Donga for the damage these false allegations may cause.
TATIPA, Abuja remains firmly committed to promoting peace, unity, and responsible dialogue among all ethnic groups in Taraba State. We encourage the public to verify information before sharing it on mainstream and social media and to avoid actions capable of inciting division or conflict. Peaceful coexistence and truth must remain the foundation of our collective progress.
